New results on AM CVn

last modified 2006-10-11 03:13

New observations put AM CVn further away than expected, but also more massive. The expected signal in LISA is now based on reliable binary parameters.

New Results on AM CVn

Recent results on AM CVn indicate that the masses of the two stars in this binary are higher than expected based on theoretical considerations. The masses are now determined directly from he observations. For details see http://arXiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0606327. This means that AM CVn is a stronger gravitational wave source than expected.

However, another recent result by the same group puts AM CVn further away than expected before, bringing the expected LISA signal back to the original expectations. However, this estimate is now based on quite reliable data.
